Africa, not the Middle East

The bus trip from Chefchaouen to Fes this afternoon has really impressed on us the fact that we are, in fact, in Africa.

Being an Arab and Muslim country, my expectation was that Morocco would look and feel like the Middle East. But this is not really the case, perhaps partly (or mostly) because of the scenery here.

Wondering what the locals thought of this, I asked our guide during our trek yesterday whether Moroccans felt like they were part of the Middle East or part of Africa. His emphatic response? "We are Africans".

Check out the photos of the amazing scenery that we saw during our crazy 4-hour bus ride (and when I say crazy, I mean that they drive like crazy here!). Although all is hot and dry now, it seems that the land here, where it is arable, is mainly used to grow wheat (and olive trees abound). And as in Spain and Portugal, the humble Eucalyptus has also made its mark!
